Ranking the AFC West Quarterbacks

Where does Carson Palmer rank in the AFC West Quarterbacks? Photo by Ric Tapia/Icon SMI

I thought I would rank the quarterbacks in the AFC West as we are already looking forward to the 2012 NFL season. Welcome to the AFC West blog by the way and please check back for new articles in the offseason. And don’t forget to check out our friend at

In ranking the AFC West Quarterbacks I have to take into account that the Kansas City Chiefs will have a quarterback battle on their hands Matt Cassel will be competing for his job, probably with Kyle Orton if he resigns with the team. So I will rank 5 quarterbacks in my AFC West article.

Ranking the AFC West Quarterbacks

5 Tim Tebow- Denver Broncos

Tim Tebow has his moments which usually occur in the 4th quarter and helped the Broncos to win the AFC West but he is the worst starting quarterback in the division. Like Cassel Tebow will be fighting for his job in 2012 but his competition has yet to be determined. Tebow is tough and he can run but his passing accuracy and football smarts are in question.

4 Kyle Orton- Kansas City Chiefs

Kyle Orton may not be with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2012 but I think he will resign to compete with Matt Cassel. There is not much difference between Cassel and Orton but I give the slight edge to Matt. Orton is a solid game manager type but his accuracy is a little in question.

3 Matt Cassel- Kansas City Chiefs

I think Matt Cassel will be the Chiefs quarterback in 2012 and I rank him as the third best quarterback in the AFC West.Casselhas skills but is inconsistent with his accuracy at times. Whoever the Chiefs quarterback is he will be hoping that the team resigns Dwayne Bowe and perhaps adds another receiver via the draft or free agency.

2 Carson Palmer- Oakland Raiders

Carson Palmer is the second best quarterback in the AFC West but I always thought he was a little overrated. Palmer is solid but I am not sure he can get the Raiders to a Super Bowl. Palmer always throws too many interceptions but his completion percentage is pretty good at 62.7 for his career. Look for Palmer to have a better year in 2012 since he will have an offseason with the team and not be “Retired” for half the season.

1 Phillip Rivers- San Diego Chargers

Phillip Rivers is the best quarterback in the AFC West and it isn’t even close. Rivers had an up and down season in 2011 and the Chargers are always inconsistent but he is the best in the division. I expect Phillip Rivers to rebound in 2012 and to see his interception numbers drop. Thanks for reading my ranking of the AFC West quarterbacks and please come back for more news and articles about the division.
