Thanks for checking out my free agency report card for each team in the AFC West. I will give a free agency grade for the Broncos, Raiders, Chargers and the Chiefs. Of course free agency is not over yet but most of the major free agents have signed.
Free Agency report card for the Oakland Raiders
The Oakland Raiders have not been major players in free agency due to salary cap constraints. The Raiders cut several veteran players to get under the cap. They then did sign corner Ron Bartell which was a good move. Still for a free agency grade I have to give the Oakland Raiders a D for lack of any major moves.
Free Agency report card for the San Diego Chargers
The San Diego Chargers lost the best wide receiver in free agency when Vincent Jackson left town. They did pop the Broncos a little by signing veteran receiver/returner Eddie Royal formerly of Denver. Veteran fullback Le’Ron McClain was a nice pickup and he may get to run the ball more than in recent seasons. The Chargers released quarterback Billy Volek and brought Charlie Whitehurst back into the fold; this is a wash in my opinion with no improvement for the position. Former Panther and Bronco Dante Rosario was signed which could be a nice move. The Chargers get a C on my AFC West free agency report card.
Free Agency report card for the Kansas City Chiefs
Signing Peyton Hillis to a modest deal may have been a very good move by the Chiefs in free agency. If Hillis is a bust then the Chiefs are not out much but if he is hungry for a big contract in 2013 then the Chiefs win out. Eric Winston was a good pickup by the Chiefs, it isn’t often you get a starting tackle in free agency. Kevin Boss may be a nice pickup as he adds his presence to the tight ends for the Chiefs. Brady Quinn was not a great pickup in my opinion but the coaching staff knows him and he knows the system the Chiefs want to run. Franchise tagging Dwayne Bowe was a good move by the team and keeps their best receiver on the team. My free agency grade for the Kansas City Chiefs is a B.
Free Agency report card for the Denver Broncos
The Denver Broncos signed the biggest free agent name in NFL history when they got Peyton Manning. This also allowed them to get rid of Tim Tebow and save face doing it. Even a 50% Manning is a big improvement over Tim Tebow. The Broncos did let Eddie Royal go and replaced him with Andre Caldwell who is a better receiver. Caleb Haine was signed to backup Peyton Manning which shows that Denver thinks Manning will stay healthy because Haine isn’t even as good as Brady Quinn. My free agency report card for the Denver Broncos is an A,
