Here is my ranking of the running backs in the 2012 NFL draft. With the Broncos and probably the Chargers in the market for a back you can expect to see one of these guys in the AFC West next season. It is not a strong running back class other than Richardson but there are a few quality players in the mix.
I Trent Richardson- Alabama
Trent Richardson is the best running back in the 2012 NFL draft and it’s not even close.Richardson had a great college career against top competition and has the size and speed to be an every down elite NFL running back.Richardson will have to work on his pass blocking but he can improve on that easily.Richardson will probably be drafted by the Cleveland Browns in the first round.
2 Doug Martin-Boise State
Doug Martin has all the tools he needs to be a solid pro running back. He is shifty and athletic enough to be a good returner and receiver and strong enough to be a inside runner and blocker. I think Martin would be an excellent choice by the Broncos in the 2nd round to supplement Willis McGahee.
3 David Wilson- Virginia Tech
Wilson had shown some flashes of ability but he puts the ball on the ground too much for my taste.Wilsonplays hard nosed football but his small frame may not take a whole lot of pounding in the NFL. Very fast and has big play potential as a runner or receiver.
4 Lamar Miller- Miami
Pure speed but lacks receiving ability but is an excellent kick returner. Miller ran a 4.3 40 at the combine but still packs 212 pounds on his frame. A team not expecting much receiving from their backs would do well to draft Lamar Miller. He can improve on his receiving and pass blocking as he is raw and young.
5 LaMichael James- Oregon State
I really expected more out of James last year and he showed nothing against good teams. What LaMichael James gives an NFL team is a good receiver with blazing speed. I think James would be a great fit with the Chargers in the role that Darren Sproles was used in. James won’t be a every down back but may do well in a rotation.
