AFC West Roundup

Thanks for reading my AFC West Roundup for the latest news in the Division. I will mention a bit of what is going on with each AFC West Team, The Oakland Raiders, Denver Broncos, Kansas City Chiefs and the San Diego Chargers.

Oakland Raider News and Notes

The Oakland Raiders have released Stanford Routt only a year after signing him to a big contract. Reminds me of the DeAngelo Hall situation from a few years ago. The Raiders have solidified their coaching staff under Dennis Allen and you can read about that here at I expect the Raiders to be active in free agency since they traded the house for Carson Palmer. Richard Seymour is apparently staying in the Silver and Black for next season.

San Diego Chargers News and Notes

Our deepest sympathy goes out to San Diego Charger’s defensive tackle Tommie Harris whose wife passed away suddenly. The couple was recently married and 29 year old Ashley Harris had given birth to their second child only six months ago.

San Diego Chargers free agency activity looks to be concentrating on their own players. Vincent Jackson is the team’s top priority to get signed. The team will be in the running back market though if they don’t resign Tolbert and or Hester. I think the team missed Daren Sproles a great deal in 2011.

Kansas City Chiefs News and Notes

Speaking of Stanford Routt the Chiefs may be one of his suitors now that he is a free agent. I expect the Chiefs to go after a few veteran free agents but not go crazy with the spending. Former Kansas City Chiefs head coach Todd Haley is now the offensive coordinator of the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Brian Daboll is the Chiefs new OC and like many in the organization has ties to the Patriots. Daboll seems to favor Matt Cassel so there may not even be a quarterback battle inKansas City.

Denver Broncos News and Notes

Running back Knowshon Moreno has been charged with drunken and careless driving which is another nail in the coffin for his career in Denver. The Broncos will surely be in the hunt for at least one more running back to supplement McGahee and maybe Moreno won’t even be with the team in 2012.

Von Miller won defensive rookie of the year from the Associated Press. It will be interesting to see how Miller fits in with the Broncos new 4-3 defense under Jack Del Rio. Brenston Buckner who played defense for John Fox and Del Rio in Carolina had some thoughts on Miller. Buckner told me he thought Miller would play outside linebacker except on passing downs where he would play defensive end.
