Will Matt Cassel be the starting quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs in 2012? Team management seemed lukewarm towards Cassel in the offseason and said there would be competition for the quarterback job of the Chiefs.
In 2009 Matt Cassel signed a six year contract with the Kansas City Chiefs that pays around $10 Million a season. With that kind of contract the Chiefs will have to start Cassel unless he is very clearly beaten out by another quarterback. If that is the case look forCasselto be released or traded. Cassel joined the Chiefs after having a good year in New England when Tom Brady was injured.
The Chiefs were very clearly after Peyton Manning who eventually signed with the Broncos. Manning made it clear early to the Chiefs that he was not interested in joining them. Ironically the Broncos were in pursuit of Cassel after his great year inNew England.
Matt Cassel has been an average quarterback in Kansas City but not in franchise QB status.Cassel has completed 693 of 1,212 passes for 7,753 yards, 53 touchdown passes and 32 interceptions as a Chief. Matt Cassel has a 57.2 completion percentage while in Kansas City.
The Chiefs didn’t shock the world with the quarterback competition that they have to go against Matt Cassel. Brady Quinn considered a bust in Cleveland under Chiefs coach Romeo Crenel was signed by the team. Quinn has knowledge of the system and of Crenel but I don’t consider him a better quarterback than Matt Cassel. Ricky Stanzi will be the third string quarterback for the Chiefs barring strange events.
There was some thought of bringing back Kyle Orton to compete with Cassel but that did not happen. Orton signed a three year deal to backup Tony Romo with the Dallas Cowboys.
I think Matt Cassel should be the starting quarterback for the Chiefs unless Quinn has an all world training camp and preseason. The Chiefs are going to ground and pound and Cassel is a capable game manager type of quarterback. As the weapons improve around him Matt Cassel will look better as well.
Getting Dwayne Bowe happy is a must for whoever is the starter for the Kansas City Chiefs. Bowe is the best wide receiver possibly in the entire division and must get plenty of work. Steve Breaston had a decent season in 2011 but the team needs more than Dexter McCluster as the third wideout.
