Thanks for reading my News and Notes for the AFC West written on July 22nd 2012. This offers news tidbits for each team in the division as well as my opinion on things going on with the teams.
Denver Broncos News and Notes
My condolences go out to the friends and families of the victims in the recent shooting in Aurora Colorado. The Broncos have tried to help out as Peyton Manning called several victims and talked to them. Several current and former Denver Broncos have also visited with some of the shooting victims. You can read about that at NFL.com.
Offensive tackle Ryan Clady has been offered a $50 Million contract which he turned down. Clady wants bigger money but I don't think he will get much more of an offer. Clady started out great but has declined recently and is not an elite tackle at this point of his career.
Oakland Raiders News and Notes
Safety Tyvon Branch has signed a four year contract worth $26.6 Million to continue playing for the Raiders. Branch is an important part of the secondary in Oakland and I feel this was a good move for both him and the Raiders.
Terrelle Prior and Matt Leinart will fight it out for the backup quarterback job behind Carson Palmer. Leinart played in this system in Houston but has been a flop as a pro. Prior's mobility may make him an attractive option behind Palmer as this offense likes a quarterback who can move around.
San Diego Chargers News and Notes
The Chargers released veteran defensive lineman Luis Castillo again and signed journeyman defensive tackle Aubrayo Franklin. Castillo has battled injuries and was released twice by the Chargers this offseason.
The Chargers also added former Chief Jackie Battle to be a backup running back and special team's player. Battle joins former Dolphin Ronnie Brown as veteran runners behind young Ryan Matthews.
Kansas City Chiefs News and Notes
Defensive back Donald Washington was recently charged with DUI of drugs, possession of Cannabis and driving with a suspended license. Washington is not a major member of the team and may be released to set an example. That is my take nothing I have heard elsewhere.
Dwayne Bowe is probably playing his last season in Kansas City unless he has such a monster year that they have to resign him to a long deal next year. I think Bowe needs to get in there and bust his tail to raise his value for next season.
